An Israeli Expert as the Head of UN Human Rights Committee amid Israel’s Crimes against Palestine

According to The Times of Israel, an Israeli expert, Yuval Shany, has been selected to head the United Nations Human Rights Committee who monitors the adherence of member states. He has been chosen by 18 members of the Geneva-based committee.

The UN Human Rights Committee which forms part of the International Bill of Human Rights, consists of legal professionals who reviews states’ adherence to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), such as the right to life, freedom of religion, speech and assembly, electoral rights and rights to due process and a fair trial.

Shany has claimed that “Global politics plays much less of a role” in the professional committee and “People are chosen — quite surprisingly in that environment — according to their suitability for the position.” He added that “we live in an international climate that no longer supports human rights. As head of the committee, I hope to harness its positive and apolitical influence to secure human rights for all citizens of the world.”

Regarding Israel’s dire human rights records toward Palestine, these statements have made eyebrows raise. Israel has disregarded the human right when the Great March of Return started on March 30 in which militants have killed about 135 and injured 15000 Palestinians.

In addition, Israel and US’s disregard for human rights was the time announcing that they would withdraw from UN Human Right Council. They wanted to push the UNHRC to end its scrutiny of Israel’s widespread human rights abuses against Palestinians, what was called a “brave and moral” decision by Netanyahu.

Considering Israel’s unrelenting viciousness, choosing an Israeli who has worked for Israel’s Ministry of Justice and as an advisor to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office and the Israeli army is insulting human rights and humanity.
