The police arrested a 27-year-old Joe Xuereb in relation to the Greenwich hammer attack which left two women injured.
A mother and daughter were found badly injured around midday in Adderley Gardens this Sunday.
A hammer was recovered from the scene by the police which they believe was used in the attack.
Following the attack and the police’s request for help from the public, they received several calls including one from who apparently followed the suspect until the police arrested him around 19:30 pm. According to the Met Police spokesman the officers who found Xuereb in Sidcup, about 2 miles from the crime scene deployed but did not use Tasers.
“The suspect was arrested as a direct result of the media appeal,” said a Met Police spokesman. “I am extremely proud of my colleagues and the community, who have all done so much to bring this part of the investigation to a safe resolution,’ added Jane Corrigan, the Detective Superintendent.
According to the eyewitnesses, after the attack that left the victims “covered in blood,” Xuereb left rather “calmly” on a bicycle.
An unnamed witness said, “It was horrific. Her face was hanging off. I was trying to put her face back together.” The 64-year-old mother and her 30-year-old daughter were in extremely critical condition when they were taken to south London hospitals.
The investigations continue and the police asked anyone with information regarding the attack to come forth.
