Palestine Resistance Led to US Threats to Cut Aid off from UNRWA

On January 2, 2018 President Donald Trump threatened to cut the financial aid to UN. He declared that his decision would be a peace plan for Israel and Palestine. According to him, he cuts the aid off till Palestine sits on the table of negotiation with Israel.

Trump claimed that by doing this, he is penalizing the UN members who rejected his decision on relocating Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. After his declaration of moving embassy, UN and most of the countries rejected and showed their opposition to the decision. UNRWA, the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees, has a great role in the life of millions of refugees from Palestine.

What made Trump angry was the fact that Palestinians show “no appreciation or respect” to the United States. He believed that by doing this he would force the Palestinian to go back to the negotiation table and called it peace process. However, Mahmoud Abbas the president of Palestine, rejected his peace plan and declared that his people don’t need any plan from US.

“Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the state of Palestine and it is not for sale for gold or billions,” said a spokesman. Trump’s decision caused so many condemnations across the world. So many countries state that the decision cannot be a peace process.

Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), claimed that Trump is sabotaging the peace process. He believed that Trump “single-handedly destroyed the very foundations of peace.”  According to him, Trump’s decision was just a violation of international law.
