In spite of the criticisms Trump has received from Helsinki summit, he has commented that people at the “higher ends of intelligence” loved his conference with Russia’s President Putin. He has believed that critics of the summit were disappointed to see the two presidents together.
So many people at the higher ends of intelligence loved my press conference performance in Helsinki. Putin and I discussed many important subjects at our earlier meeting. We got along well which truly bothered many haters who wanted to see a boxing match…
There have been a widespread backlash as Trump ignored US intelligence agencies’ document in Russia’s meddling in the US 2016 presidential election. He said: “I have President Putin. He just said it’s not Russia. I will say this. I don’t see any reason why it would be, but I really do want to see the server…” Later, at the White House, he claimed that he wanted to say “why it wouldn’t be Russia“.
John Brennan, Former CIA Director, called Trump’s performance in Helsinki “treasonous” in a Twitter post. In addition, John McCain, Republican Senator, called it as “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory.”
Although he has backtracked his comments, he is still standing by his performance in Helsinki claiming big results were to come from this meeting.
