According to Politico, Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former advisor Newt Gingrich traveled to Paris to speak at the conference of the terrorist group, Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK) and its affiliates in Paris. The MEK is a guerrilla movement, which has fought against the Shah and later against the Iranian movement. They were exiled to Iraq and Albania.
A group of US politicians including former FBI director Louis J. Freeh, US Senator John McCain, and a delegation of US Senators Thom Tillis, Roy Blunt, and John Cornyn have visited the MEK in Albania, under cover of meeting Albanian politicians.
The US and European Union listed the MEK as a terrorist organization in 1997 and 2002, but after the efforts for vilifying Iran, they eliminated it from the list in 2009 and 2012. In this relation, the US Congressman, Ted Poe, introduced a bill demanded the Iraq government “to compensate the former residents of Camp Ashraf [the former MEK camp] for their assets seized by groups affiliated with the Government of Iraq.”
Giuliani and Gingrich’s involvement in the conference, is one of the several steps such as US’s withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal, increasing sanctions and other pressures Trump has taken in line with the group’s desire to weaken Iran’s rulers.
